A colleague of mine recommended the David Shrigley’s retrospective at the Hayward Gallery.

After a quick glance at the exhibition booklet, it was evident we would get on:

He admits to a fascination with ‘found stuff’: graffiti, and items such as shopping lists, telephone doodles, hand-drawn maps and diagrams recovered from pockets of coats donated to a charity shop.

I’ve always been interested in lists.

His work is witty, funny, original, dark and satirical.

The most clever funny conceptual artist?

I came across this lovely C in Cornwall last weekend.

I love the vibrant colours of the seaweed, setting the C so perfectly well.

They don’t make books like that anymore.

These are proper books. They’re not endorsed by the richest publishing house or a TV show.

You look at them and you can tell you’re in for a treat.

You’re drawn to them. You want to pick them up. You have to leaf through them. Then, before you know it, you’re sitting down… reading, absorbed.

I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to old books.

You could have your favourite books of all times or… if you had the time and the inclination, you could have your reading list (which would evolve throughout the year), your bookgroup reading list or your long-term reading list, you know, the one that’s bound to have War and Peace on it.

Ah. Tough job.

In the first two episodes, Simon goes from South Africa to Mozambique, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Mauritius and the Seychelles.

True to form, he teases us with images of paradise and then goes on to uncover stories of human tragedies, ecological disasters and piracy.

So… if you do happen to have a conscience, that’s pretty much sixteen countries you won’t be visiting for a while…
